# How to Remove Duplicate Assignments from Your Gradebook

## This article covers how to find and delete duplicate assignments in your gradebook. Sort the gradebook by first name to see duplicates side by side, check the ones you want to remove, and delete them with Bulk Edit. Deleting is permanent, so read the section on which assignments are safe to delete first.

### Step 1: Sort your gradebook by first name

1. Go to your gradebook.
2. Click **First Name** at the top of the table.

Sorting by first name puts each student's assignments next to each other. This is the easiest way to spot duplicates for one student or many.

### Step 2: Load the whole gradebook

**Scroll down until every student is loaded.** Do this after you sort, not before. If you skip this step, you will not see all of the duplicates.

### Step 3: Decide which assignments to delete

Check each pair of duplicates before you select anything.

- **Not started:** The safest one to delete. No work has gone into it.
- **Started, not submitted:** Safe to delete if the other copy has a grade you want the student to keep. Deleting it also means the student does not get another attempt.
- **Graded:** Do not delete a graded assignment unless you have two graded copies. If you have two, choose which grade you want the student to keep and delete the other.

### Step 4: Select the duplicates

On the left side of the table, check the box next to each assignment you want to delete.

### Step 5: Delete

1. Click **Bulk Edit** at the top of the table.
2. In the pop-up, scroll to the bottom.
3. Select **Delete Assignment**.
4. Click **Delete**.

### Important: deletion is permanent

Deleted assignments do not come back. There is no undo. Check your selections before you click Delete.

### Before you finish, check three things

1. The whole gradebook is loaded.
2. You are not deleting a graded assignment you want to keep.
3. Every box you checked is a duplicate you want gone.

### Common questions

### How do I find duplicate assignments quickly?

Click First Name at the top of the gradebook. Each student's assignments sit together, so duplicates show next to each other.

### Which duplicate should I delete if one is not started?

Delete the not started copy. It is the safest choice.

### What if both copies are graded?

Choose the grade you want the student to keep. Delete the other copy.

### What if one copy is graded and one is started?

Delete the started copy if you want the student to keep the grade and not have another attempt.

### Why do I see duplicates in the first place?

Duplicates usually show up when an assignment is assigned more than once, or when a student started an assignment on their own and you then assigned it to the whole class.

### Is there a way to undo a delete?

No. Deleted assignments are permanent.
