 How to Reassign or Unsubmit a Student's Assignment

If you need to unsubmit a student's assignment, or you want to reassign the assignment so they get a new, blank copy of it, this article covers both cases.

Two ways to give a student more time
  • Unsubmit: The student keeps their existing work. The assignment unlocks as if they never submitted it, so they can make changes and submit again.
  • Reassign: The student gets a brand new, blank copy of the assignment. Their original submission stays in the gradebook. Use this if you want a record showing you gave them a second try.
Unsubmit an assignment
  1. Go to the gradebook for the assignment.
  2. Find the student's row.
  3. In the Submitted column, hover over the submission date.
  4. Two options appear: Unsubmit and Reassign.
  5. Click Unsubmit.


The assignment unlocks with the student's existing work still in it. They can review it, make changes, and submit again.

Important: check the due date

If you unsubmit an assignment, check that the due date is still in the future. If the due date has already passed, the assignment will lock again right away.

Reassign an assignment
  1. Go to the gradebook for the assignment.
  2. Find the student's row.
  3. In the Submitted column, hover over the submission date.
  4. Click Reassign.
  5. Set the due date.
  6. Click Assign.

The student's original submission stays in the gradebook, and they get a new, blank copy assigned to them individually.

Common questions

Will unsubmitting erase the student's work? No. The student keeps everything they already entered. Unsubmitting only unlocks the assignment so they can edit and resubmit it.

Does reassigning replace the student's original submission? No. The original submission stays in the gradebook. Reassigning adds a new, separate copy for the student to complete.

Which option should I use if a student submitted by mistake? Unsubmit. It gets them back into the same copy without losing their work.

Which option should I use if I want a record that I gave a student a second chance? Reassign. It creates a new copy alongside the original submission.
